Implementing an EHR System in a Healthcare Organization

3-3 Final Project Milestone One 1 3-3 Final Project Milestone One: Organizational Overview and Applications Department of Health, Southern New Hampshire University HCM-220: Healthcare Data Management 3-3 Final Project Milestone One 2 Organizational Overview and Applications In this milestone, I will establish key details about the organization I will be assisting as it looks to adopt a new electronic health record (EHR) system for organization Alpha. These key details will directly inform the next steps in selecting and implementing an effective EHR system for them. Organization Alpha Healthcare organization Alpha has an intensive care unit, a level III trauma center that has been assigned to the emergency department, and other designated care areas that provide outpatient and orthopedic surgeries, women's health, pediatrics, and cardiology clinics. They have many auxiliary service lines and can provide outpatient rehabilitation services and a community wellness program. Due to the wide range of services the healthcare organization provides, the EHR will need to communicate with each of them by completing a system analysis to find the functional requirements that are needed. It will also need to be equipped to handle the current and future paper records that are received which will be scanned into and then stored by the different service departments. Cloud computing will most likely be needed for the EHR so that it can provide efficient and adequate services from the scalability and flexibility of the information gained through an integrated information system that will be able to handle the data exchanges. The key stakeholders that would need to be part of the EHR selection process would take a large project team consisting of physicians, nurses, risk managers, and laboratory staff that work in those respective service and auxiliary departments of the organization. The chief information officer, chief medical information officer, chief analytic officer, and liaisons of the vendor representatives will be needed so they can provide most of the expertise. 3-3 Final Project Milestone One 3 Applications: Health Informatics Applications such as a clinical decision support system could be useful as this will allow quick access to evidence-based protocols, best practices, and guidelines for healthcare professionals and the use of telehealth and telemedicine by providing virtual consultations, patient education, and remote monitoring. Clinical diagnosis and treatment could then be used for incapacitated patients as well as those living in remote and under-served areas that do not have great access to healthcare. (Mielke, 2023) Applications: Requirements The applications should adhere to current regulations and provide the disclosure of information system or release of information so that it can manage the processing of requests for protected health information received and to be processed. The HIPAA Security rules will also enforce the protection of physical hardware that stores electronic personal health information and those standards should be based upon the compliance program that will provide monitoring and audits if necessary from the EHR.
