Technologies and Data Extraction Techniques in Health Information Exchange

Running Head: TECHNOLOGY AND DATA EXTRACTION TECHNIQUES Technology and Data Extraction Techniques Amy Alexander Southern New Hampshire University January 21, 2024 TECHNOLOGIES AND DATA EXTRACTION TECHNIQUES 2 Technologies Used in the HIE Across health care, technology has become a vital part of patient care and everyday operations. Many health care facilities rely on fast and reliable transferring of information to provide quality care to patients at every visit and in-between, and for administrative tasks and billing needs. A Health Information Exchange (HIE) is the sharing of medical information between different healthcare providers (Watters, 2020). Every year there are more hospitals incorporating into HIE practices, and following the standards set for them. One of the technologies used in an HIE is identity management, such as Master Patient Index (MPI) that allows all facilities to manage patients in their care (Dharmarajan, et al., 2023). Use of identity management ensures there is a less likeliness of duplicate EHRs created, and a continuation of care is possible. Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) is an identity management technology that searches for duplicate patient files, and flags and fixes errors it finds (Aroditis, 2017). This innovative algorithm technology not only reduces errors within the HIE, but it also promotes greater research possibilities, searching for various problematic outcomes or prevalence in illness possibilities that could prove beneficial for the community and population health. A Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) is also a common form of technology used by HIEs, as it's a central location designed to store health information for the facility members, so all have access to its data. Whether the facilities have direct access to the records or they have to request the content they are searching for, it's a central storage hub for all of the members within the HIE, holding the data and keeping it secure and safe. TECHNOLOGIES AND DATA EXTRACTION TECHNIQUES 3 Another common technology used with HIEs would be Database Management Systems (DBMS) described by Watters (2020) as, "software tools used to store, analyze, modify and access data" p188. The DBMS is a perfect example of the common technology used by HIEs because the data needs to be stored for future use, but also extractable and ready for analysis if needed. Any of the facility members of the HIE will have access to the database by either direct access or query requests. There are several different types of DBMS such as relational databases, which are used mostly for EHRs but are also used in a wide variety of other industries. One example of a relational database is a CDW, which allows the extraction and analysis of records. How to Extract Data Providers will need to have the patient information to find the patient files and other health records they are looking for while searching with the patient identifier such as the MPI or EMPI. The MPI holds information unique to each patient, and with the identifier (such as name and birthdate), providers can extract their records from the DBMS stored within
