The life cycle of an EHR system can be varied as different practices will need different
accesses and features. But the foundation of its actual life cycle is static across the board. All
must include a problem-solving framework that includes Strategic Planning, Design, Build &
Test, Interoperability, Training & Activation, and Post Go-Live review.
As implantation for this system is not an easy process, the planning portion of this is key
This will minimize errors and ease any transition that is to take place. Correct implementation
can change the course of an organization. New capabilities, improved workflows, higher
efficiency, and better data structure contribute to overall stability and user satisfaction. Planning
encompasses a larger portion of a smooth and effective go-live. Governance structure, strategic
decision making, guiding principles, work plans, program management, etc are all including in
this section of setup. During building and testing, this is really where "make or break' comes
into play. All builds should be under the guidance of strategic decision making and guiding
principles. In other words, stick to the script. An integrated and comprehensive testing program
works to ensure the system is not just working but is working as designed. The systems in use
today manage more and more of the day to day in any practice and inclusion of third party
systems that manage those operations need to be understood so that EHR connections and
transfers both ways are as seamless as possible. In getting to training and activation, preparation
for end users with the new technology is a key piece to any rollout. Your user is your first line of
defense to ensure accurate functionality in "real" scenarios. Because of this you want to make
sure that super user programs, operational readiness, and day one activation plans are watertight
Once you have all of this covered, it is go live time. But the management of that system doesn't
stop. Here is where managing upgrades, updates, system maintenance, issues that arise due to
legacy performance, system enhancements, and all ongoing issues are handled.
