Heather Arsenault HIM 220 - Healthcare Data Management 22EW3 Due Date: 1/23/22 GRADE 30/30
Southern New Hampshire University HIM 220 Module Three Worksheet
for Health Information Technology. Then, answer the following:
1. What is the purpose of the data dictionary and why is it important to create one? According to our textbook, the purpose of the data dictionary is to "standardize definitions and ensure consistent use. It also helps to control the quality of data. The data dictionary improves data consistency because it ensures that fields have the same meaning and format throughout the organization. It helps create consistent data field names, data field definitions, field length, and element values" (Sayles, 2018, 30). It is important to create one because it improves consistency throughout the organization which, in turn, can avoid confusion and duplicate or inaccurate information in the system.
2. How will the data dictionary help improve or address data consistency, data currency, data definitions, data granularity, data precision, data relevancy, and data timeliness? The data dictionary makes things more consistent throughout the organization. This allows anyone who uses the IS to understand the data. To use an example from our textbook from table 3.1, that insurance type for Medicare is M in all IS's not MCR. Doing this avoids any confusion in each department because if they are used to seeing "M" as Medicare but they see "MCR" they might not know what that means.
3. Do you think it is necessary for this healthcare facility to have a data warehouse? If so, why, and how, will the laboratory IS provide useful information to the data warehouse? I think that a data warehouse is vital to a healthcare facility. It is a central location that holds data from different sources and can be used to analyze the information held within it. Organizations can use a data warehouse to look for trends in patient care, physician performance, the status of patients who have had a specific procedure or are on a certain medication. The laboratory IS would be useful information to the data warehouse because it will provide data on which lab tests are the most common, how long it takes for results to come back, normal ranges for the results, and more. This will give the providers the information so they know when to expect results and can relay the expectation to the patients.
4. How could data mining be applied to this scenario? I think data mining can be applied to this scenario because it can help the organization find any errors or anomalies that might be in their database and correct them. They can also help define terms in the data dictionary and clarify any issues that might arise regarding questions regarding Iab tests etc.
