Module Eight Journal - EHR Reflection
The system development life cycle consists of four parts: planning/analysis, design,
implementation, and maintenance/evaluation. As we already discussed the first three parts, we will now
focus on the final part maintenance and evaluation.
Evaluation Phase
Once the new system has been implemented and functioning properly, the team is next tasked
with evaluating how well the implementation process went. This allows the team to determine if the
system functions as expected. This also allows them to learn what went well in the implementation
process and what could have been done better. The evaluation phase also allows the team to assess if
the facility has reached all of the goals they set in place during the planning and analysis phase. It also
allows them to test out the program to ensure that it functions as expected and to make any changes
Implementation Phase
The implementation phase is very important in implementing a new IS and involves many steps.
This includes site and space preparation, this includes assessing the work areas and making any physical
changes to the area where the computers, printers, scanners, etc. If there is going to be an on or offsite
data storage facility, the setup would happen in this step also. The next thing that is included in
implementation is user preparation. This involves preparing the staff and providing them with
information regarding the new IS. It is also very important to keep the staff up to date with how the
implementation is going and give them as much information as possible. This will help users know what
to expect moving forward with the new IS.

installing and setting up any new hardware and software that will be needed for the IS implementation.
The next step is programming and customization. If the facility is designing its own IS, programming
would be the next step, if they are implementing an already existing IS this step would be more of a data

customizations would allow the vendor to deny the facility a service agreement (Sayles, 20ff8)
The next steps are user configuration/settings and screen design. This allows the facility to set up
the users properly as well as set the screen design so that it works for their facility. The facility would
next do a reengineering process that evaluates the way that the HCO does business to improve
efficiency. This would allow them to implement any changes to processes that may be in place or
implement new ones if necessary. Along with reengineering would come policy and procedure
