Review the "Real World Case" involving a data dictionary on p. 40 of Introduction to Information Systems for Health Information Technology. Then, answer the following:
1. What is the purpose of the data dictionary and why is it important to create one?
The purpose of the data dictionary is to help control the quality of data, improve data consistency by ensuring that fields have the same meaning and format throughout the organization, and help to create consistent data field names, data field definitions, field length, and element values. (Sayles, 2018)
2. How will the data dictionary help improve or address data consistency, data currency, data definitions, data granularity, data precision, data relevancy, and data timeliness?
The data dictionary will help improve these areas by creating more consistency throughout the healthcare organization. They will also assist in improving data quality, integrity, documentation, and data analysis.
3. Do you think it is necessary for this healthcare facility to have a data warehouse? If so, why, and how, will the laboratory IS provide useful information to the data warehouse?
I do think it is necessary for the healthcare facility to have a data warehouse. This will assist in storing information for multiple sources such as electronic health records (EHR), electronic medical records (EMR), enterprise resource planning systems (ERP). radiology and lab databases, or wearables. (Shashkina, 2022)
4. How could data mining be applied to this scenario?
Data mining can be used in this scenario to help the healthcare organization filter out any errors and/or anomalies within their data dictionary. It can also assist in clarifying terms implemented by the laboratory IS.
