When it comes to organizations, it often depends on how people interact and work together that will
determine if the team will be a cohesive unit. From my understanding, the social system that was present
at my company was important to the way that people resonated with one another. As our text indicates "A
social system is a complex set of human relationships interacting in many ways" (Newstrom, 2015, p.
86).
Being in the military there is a high employee turnover. A job assignment may last anywhere
from 3 to 5 years. When the turnover happens, its anywhere from 4 to 5 people at a time and it
changes the social system and the culture of the organization. They also vary in rank, time in
service and their replacement should be of the same paygrade that they were when they first
checked in. Each person is diverse in what they bring into the organization and develop different
relationships both personal and professional that affect the social system. We recently had a
turnover period in where we lost 7 people that were all experienced. Their replacements however
were not of the same paygrade, limited experience had time in service. This was partly because
of COVID but we had to take whatever personnel we were given and work around it. It is
extremely important to get the level of knowledge and basic understanding of the job
requirements up to speed so that we can maintain a balanced equilibrium. According to the text,
even the slightest changes can throw off the social equilibrium and create an imbalance within an
organization until it can be reestablished (Nordstrom, 2015 p. 87). Before this change happened,
everyone meshed well and got things done in a timely manner and could depend on one another
when needing to get things done. I knew that this was only happening because everyone was so
new, and the remainder of the team was very junior in rank and would need more guidance. The
culture within our department is to build comradery, to operate efficiently and that we take care
of personnel while building them up. We made sure this was effective by providing the team with
training and team building exercises so that the focus would be on everyone and just certain
individuals. Maintaining these relationships represents a functional effect because it is favorable
for the system. Between myself and my co-worker, we were to find different ways of doing
things to train our personnel which is important in shaping the social system we have. As the
management, it was our job to actively seek ways to improve the quality of the organization. In
return we are able to create a social environment where people can work together and respect one
another's opinions and views. "Hence Social harmony is quite essential for truly being social as
being social also means living harmoniously with each other"
