Internet Choice and network configuration
As a network engineer or an IT person who is helping to build a building that will be
workable in, I also must be able to find the right internet service provider and provide the right
networking equipment and computer software as well as if users need to print printer hookup and
configuration. I will first start out with the network hookup. There are many needs for a network
to be reliable. The most important parts are speeds both upload and download. These are
important because with the amount of work each employee does the network has to run smoothly
and not have network connection issues or slowness. Since our building will have 50 employees
it will be best to have more speed due to the employees using the network for phone calls and
computer use like internet browsing and emailing. I have found that the best speed for a
company this size will be about 1 Gbps or 1,000 Mbps speed. Having this speed will help in
having less network slowness and dropping (outside of the normal ISP network outages). I also
must make sure that they also have network security options to keep our internet safe. I also have
compared and thought of whether we want to have fiber-optic cabling or standard cable internet.
Looking up this means that it has to offer and work with the internet speeds which we are
needing. I have narrowed the search for 2 ISP down to Comcast and Verizon. Both Verizon and
comcast offer good pricing for their products and have similar speeds. The only difference is that
Verizon is only offered in certain states while Comcast is offered in more states. We must make
sure we choose a service provider that can offer us the speed we need, the cabling we want as
well as the security and coverage. Both Verizon and comcast offer fiber cabling as an option.
Verizon only offers 940 Mbps speed while comcast offers the speed we need which is 1 Gbps
(1,000Mbps). Verizon and comcast both have static IP address options as well as VoIP/internet
phone access. The major difference is that Verizon has symmetric fiber speeds which helps in
both download and upload speed while comcast does not offer that. Even though comcast does
show that they do have slighter higher download speeds than Verizon does I have chosen to go
with Verizon. Even though the speed is only 60 Mbps slower that comcast the ability to have the
same upload speed like Verizon has been the immense help in deciding who to go with. Verizon
also does have better customer service support. Both companies offer other stuff that the other
offers but Verizon is more known for their fiber optic network which would be a faster and better
network to go with. Verizon does also offer network security as well
