IT 212: INTRO TO COMPUTER NETWORKS DR. Michael Gideon, Ph.D
After some footwork and technical analysis for the upcoming Fayetteville, NC office. I
have concluded what Network hardware is needed for my chosen topology layout, both physical
and logical, as well as the communications media and modes of transports for this data. But first,
I would like to reiterate what an OSI (Open systems Interconnection) model is and how they
work together for a safe and efficient working network. The OSI model shows how data
(information) is processed and transferred from hardware to hardware. This model has 7 layers
The application layer is basically what we are handling and interacting with, software that sends
and receives this data. The presentation layer prepares this data by ensuring it is encrypted and
coded properly for safe transport. The session layer oversees creating a solid communication link
between the sending and receiving devices, ensuring the channel is safe and that is closes when
the session has ended. The transport layer turns this data into transferable code to its predestined
location using the chosen medium. The network layer basically addresses the route and packages
the data to its destination. The data-link layer processes this packets into frames. The physical
layer is basically the physical hardware that makes up this network.
The recommended logical topology for this new office in NC will be a Star topology, this
version of topology isn't too expensive to implement, and it also provides more redundancy,
basically lower downtime in case the network needs some maintenance or if we experience any
hardware failure. The network will still be functional if any of these occurrences happen to
execute. A Bus topology would not be suitable for a network of this size, having all machines
connected with one another. This lay out, in theory may work, but if too many cable faults
happen at once, this can cause some serious downtime and effect business functions. A Ring
topology is when a node is connected to two other nodes, front and back end, this is much more
effective than a Bus topology. A Ring topology will reduce the chances of data collision, but the
major disadvantage would be that if one computer needs to communicate with another. All nodes
would have to process and transfer this data. I have concluded that a Star topology would be
best, but to do this we would need to configure all nodes to a central device. Another advantage
to this decision on topology is that it is scalable, it has room for growth!
In terms of the network hardware, we would need enough equipment for 50 employees
and their Executive Vice President. We would need to implement a Hub for this Star topology to
function efficiently. This Hub will be responsible for connecting and processing all data for
communication, this is the backbone of the LAN (local area network). Hubs also work on the
Physical layer in the OSI model. The next hardware device
