Having been tasked with the setup report for the office in Fayetteville, NC, I have come up with
a plan for bringing the office online. With many of the employees within the company mobile, or
working from home, we must ensure that the best network is created for them to complete their
tasks without interruptions. This report is my best opinion for that network setup.
As a start, the Open Systems Interconnection, or OSI, model is something you should understand
before we go over the network itself. The OSI model is a seven-layer communication model that
provides standards of communication between computers on networks. These layers start at
seven, work down to one, and then build back up to seven on the receiving computer.
Layer seven is the Application layer. The layer where we interact with the computer and where
applications access network services. This layer is responsible for the software's sending and
receiving of data and presenting this data to the user.
Layer six is the Presentation layer. This later translates, encrypts, and compresses data while also
preparing it for the application layer on receiving computers.
Layer five is the Session layer. This layer sets up the communication between systems and
devices, ensuring sessions for sending data are functional and closing them when communication
is over. This ensures that data is received without fault.
Layer four is the Transport layer. This is the layer where data segmentation takes place and sent
out for end-to-end communication. It is also responsible for putting it back together on the
receiving system.
Layer three is the Network layer. This layer constitutes the physical path of the data. Segments
are broken up into packets and routed to their destination.
Layer two is the Data Link layer. It breaks down the packets into frames and corrects errors from
the physical layer.
Layer one is the Physical layer. Which is the physical, or wireless, connection between systems
on the network.
With this in mind, we want to make sure that anyone working from home, or in an office, can
connect with the new network when needed as well as be able to use any hardware that we
provide for them. Should we come into any issues we can use the OSI model to help us solve
where any problems are coming from
As with any new network, we will want to ensure that all hardware needed at least meets the
minimum requirements for what we will be using it for. We will need a hub for the network. This
is what will connect all the devices we will be using. A switch, which is a multiport device that
can help improve the efficiency of the network, will be used to read incoming packets, and send
them to the correct destination on the network. After that we will need a router installed on the
network to provide wireless as well as wired connections for the building. We can configure the
