Introduction to Data and Information Management

Running head: IT 204: FINAL PROJECT MILESTONE FOUR IT 204: Final Project Milestone Four Christopher Gouchenouer Southern New Hampshire IT 204: FINAL PROJECT MILESTONE FOUR 2 DBMS Specification Table DBMS Assigned: IBM DB2 Specification Category Specification/Comments 1. Data Size Limits The maximum number of records per table varies based on page size, with the largest allowing 32,714. Column names have a maximum length of 30 bytes. Maximum CHAR limit of 255 bytes. VARCHAR scales with page size, up to 32,704 bytes. Maximum GRAPHIC length of 127 double-byte characters. The maximum size of a simple or segmented table is 64 GB. 2. Purchase Cost . Cost Depends on the edition of DB2 used. The available options are DB2 Database, DB2 Warehouse, DB2 Big SQL, DB2 Event Store, DB2 on Cloud, DB2 Hosted, and DB2 Warehouse on Cloud. DB2 on Cloud starts at $189 a month, can scale up for additional RAM, CPU and storage. Hybrid Data Management Platform has a minimum cost of $918 a month, this can be allocated to the different products as needed. DB2 is administrated by the client. However, IBM is able to provide remote assistance through SSH, or Secure Socket Shell. DB2 is considered user-friendly, with online tutorials to assist first time users. DB2 on Cloud is fully administrated by IBM. 3. Administration 4. Operating System/Hardware Requirements DB2 runs on Linux, UNIX, Solaris, and Windows DB2 Requires a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, with 1 GB recommended. On Linux and UNIX the temporary directory needs at least 512 MB, or 2 GB with pureScale enabled. The /var directory needs at least 512 MB, and the /home directory requires 1 to 1.5 GB. Windows requires a minimum of 2 GB of disk space. 5. Features DB2 on Cloud is a cloud database fully managed by IBM. Running head: IT 204: FINAL PROJECT MILESTONE FOUR 3 . The Hybrid Data Management Platform includes all DB2 products deployed as Advanced Enterprise Server Edition. Includes IBM Blu Acceleration, IBM pureScale, Advanced Storage Optimization, SQL compatibility, and disaster recovery. Always-on availability with 99.99% uptime. IBM BLU Acceleration - An easy to use feature that optimizes storage usage and improves analytical performance. Storage Optimization - Combines multiple compression techniques to maximize the use of storage. DB2 pureScale - Clustering technology that co-ordinates multiple DB2 members with shared data for improved scalability. SQL compatibility Disaster Recovery . DB2 is able to scale up to 128 database members that share storage but have independent processing. DB2 pureScale enables performance to scale nearly linearly with each added member. DB2 purescale maintains 95% efficiency up to 64 members. At the maximum of 128 members efficiency is 84%. The High Availability feature ensures that a system has no single point of failure DB2 is optimized to deliver industry-leading performance across multiple workloads, while lowering administration, storage, development, and server costs. 6.
