Artists, creatives, and poets passions are all derived from some source of inspira- tion. Each piece an or art a creator brings to life holds a deeper meaning of intent. Sculp- ture Fredric-Auguste-Bartholdi never intended for the statue to represent immigration. In a sense, he viewed his creation as something nearly opposite: as a symbol of liberty spreading outward from America (2018). Lazarus, who authored the poem, "The New Colossus" theme was not related to American immigration. Instead, her sonnet mirrored the feelings of the time as many immigrants during the late 1880's - 1930's. Lazarus's original intent for writing the sonnet was to show the hardships of the Jewish refugees f 1 eeing Russia.
My personal views on intent and the Statue of Liberty's meaning remain the same. Though Fredric-Auguste-Bartholdi and Lazarus had good intentions, my beliefs lie with lady liberty. This in part is due to my political and generational beliefs, and because I have a personal connection to the Statue of Liberty. My Grandfather immigrated to the United States of America from Messina, Sicily. The Statue of Liberty was the f i rst thing my Grandfather, Amato Messina saw when he arrived in Ellis Island as a 11 year old boy. Both articles opened my eyes to dif f erent interruptions and forms of intent. Even with this knowledge in mind, I will still interrupt the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom, the new world. The insight I gained on the original intent has me thinking that Lazarus was a women before her time. She was concerned and af f ected by the Jewish prosecution in Russia. And, it inspired her to write the sonnet which now sits at the base of Miss Liberty.
2. Project 1: Question & Approach
Was Banksy's intent for Ballon Girl to be shredded? Did someone else hide the secret shredder inside the frame? My approach to solving the shredded Balloon Girl mystery is to conduct research and interviews on the topic. I also plan on visiting the Boston Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA). I'll interview the curator and further discuss Balloon Girl I've also set up a meeting with my company's Corporate Art Director in order to gain as much insight from the industry experts as possible.
