An immediate notification/communication is used when information needs to get to the public right away. This form of communication is not always used. It is reserved for high profile crime arrest, when the police need the public's help with information, or when a serious crime has been committed. It is also a way for the community to have the information that the police have, to help build relationships with the community and the police.
A press release is another way for the police to address the community with information needed. A press release can be about giving the public information as well as asking the public for help with seeking information.
Social Media use with law enforcement is on the rise. This form of communication is a way to connect the police and their community. They can use this to release/seek information as well as post videos with helpful information for the community. With the popularity of social media this is where the public is turning to for information before they turn on the television.
Internal reports are to keep track of the conduct within the department. Complaints filed, when force was used, and any disciplinary reports. This is so the public can see everything that is happening within the department and know that action is taken, which helps build the relationship with the community.
