The First work of art that I chose was crafted by Judith Leyster. The name of the artwork
is Self Portrait. This portrait was created in 1630 and It's dimensions are 2' 5'x 2' 2'. This portrait
was created in cultural origin Baroque, Dutch Golden Age. The medium is oil paint. The stylist
movement is Self-Portraiture. The artwork is currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in
Washington DC
The second work of art that I chose was crafted by Frida Khalo. The name of the artwork
is The Two Fridas. The Painting was created in 1939 and It's dimensions are 5'8' x5' 8'. This
paintings medium is oil on canvas and cultural origin is Naive art period. The Stylist movement
is Self-Portraiture. The painting is currently housed in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico
City.
In the renowned "Self Portrait" Painting. Judith Leyster paints a portrait of herself.
In this portrait she shows us a picture of herself painting, while holding a paintbrush. Not only is
she painting a portrait of herself, but it is of herself painting another one of her famous artworks
As a woman in this day in age it was uncommon for one to enter into the Sait Lukes's Guild of
Haarlem as an independent master in 1633, like she did. Leyster even had paying students for her
own workshop. Women in the 1600's were not known for showing themselves in raw form. It
reflects the bravery of her in her culture, and the confidence she had in her work. The darker tone
of the picture in the background makes Leyster stand out. With her elegant dress and ruffled neck
piece. Which all shows off her personality.
The Formal Characteristics that both works' share are the way that they both paint
themselves in very elegant attire. They both use the darker toned backgrounds to bring out
themselves more in the portraits. The differences that I notice is Leyster painted herself happy
and doing what she loves, using only one emotion. While Frida used two separate emotions and
views of herself in one portrait. She shows herself calmer on the left, and on the right she looks
more stern, staring straight ahead. The overall Cultural climate of both portraits is self-identity!
self-preservation. How Leyster shows that she is happy in what she does and express her
happiness by advertising herself painting another one of her works. While Khalo, shows how she
may have struggled with her self-identity and preserving an emotional moment.
