Thesis Statement
Despite the resistance faced to pass the Civil Rights Acts throughout history, the Civil
Rights Movement and social activist helped to pave the way to gain equality and rights for the
African Americans ultimately improving the social conditions of African Americans and
fostering equality and growth within society amongst the races.
Introduction
In 1866 the Civil Rights Act extended the rights of emancipated slaves declaring all
persons born in the United States, regardless of race is a citizen of the United States. This
historical event contributed to the beginning of integration of African Americans in society,
however, while protecting their civil rights, the act fell short on protecting the political rights of
the African American community. Faced with racism, oppression, violence, segregation, and
intimidation, this milestone in history would begin the civil rights movement, arguably one of the
most influential periods of American history. A movement organized by the African American
community to end racial discrimination and segregation and gain equal rights with a focal point
of voting and public education for all races.
