Network Troubleshooting and Recommendations

1 CYB 310 - 6-1 Project One Network Evaluation Thomas Gilmore Southern New Hampshire University CYB-310 Network Defense Daniel Schmeling June 11, 2023 2 For this assignment, I am to choose two challenges and provide recommendations on how to address the challenges. I have chosen Challenge 1: Network_1 segment needs to have all access to the Network_3 segment and Challenge 2: The workstations on Network_2 cannot access s The_Internet. For Challenge 1, I studied the network topology and determined several issues that are preventing Network_1 segment from accessing the Network_3 segment. My first step is to ensure that all networking devices are powered up. As shown in the diagram, Network_3 router seems to be powered off. Once it is powered up, I would verify if the issue remained. If it did, I would continue troubleshooting. Following the data's path between Network_1 and Network_3, a few physical connections need to be checked. The connection between each host and the Network_1 switch seems to be functioning correctly. The connection between Network_1 switch and the main switch is working properly so we will continue troubleshooting the data's path. The connection between the main switch and the Network_3 router seems to be fine. The physical connection between Network_3 router and Network_3 switch is broken which stops the data flow. This ethernet cable should be examined to determine if it is disconnected or broken. After examining the connections between the Network_3 switch and the hosts on the network, it is determined that the broken connection between the router and switch on Network_3 is causing the lack of communications. Once this connection is repaired or replaced, Network_1 segment should be able to communicate with the Nework_3 segment. For Challenge 2, I analyzed why workstations on Network_2 cannot access the Internet. My first step is to ensure that all networking devices are powered up. As shown in the diagram, the main firewall and the Network_2 router seems to be powered off. Once these are powered up, I would verify if the issue remained. Following the data's path between Network_2 and the 3 Internet, a few physical connections need to be checked. Starting with the hosts of Network_2, I checked the physical connections between hosts and the switch. I noticed that two computers have broken physical connections. These two connections need to be investigated. Once these two connections have been reestablished, I would resume troubleshooting. The next step is to check the paths of the communication between the switch and Network_2 router. The connection between the switch and router on Network_2 is working properly so we will continue troubleshooting the data's path. The next connection is between the Network_2 router and the main switch. This connection seems to be working correctly so I would continue to the connection between the main switch and the network firewall. This connection seems to be working normally so I would check the last connection, the main firewall to the Internet. As a last step in troubleshooting, I would verify Network_2's accessibility to
