Network Evaluation Report CYB-310 PROJECT ONE HANNAH KRAMER October 5 2023
This report will cover two challenges that were given out in the interview process for the company. The first challenge is that Network_1 segment needs to have all access to the Network_3 segment. The second on that will be discussed is the workstations on Network_2 cannot access the internet. In this report that follows I will attempt to tackle both challenges and recommend possible solutions to the issues based upon the information that was provided. I will also discuss the potential causes for both challenge that were issued. For the first challenge, based on the topology provided to me it looks like Network 1 is segmented from accessing Network_3. On first glance Its also looks like the there are some devices that are powered off. Almost all the firewalls seem to be powered off on the network or maybe even not physically connected. Once I have checked that all devices are powered up. I would check to see if the issue still remains a problem. To do this I would send a ping command from a machine on Network_1 to a known good IP address from a machine on Network_3 and see if it goes through and the do the reverse. If one does not go through but the other does that is an indicator that I need to inspect the firewall on Network_3. If both do not yield results It is probably due to a broken connection between the switch and firewall on Network_3 and that will need to be repaired. While inspecting the firewall on Network_3 I would check the management console and make sure that there isn't a rule preventing people outside the network from accessing it. If there is one, I would probably create an exception so that any computer on Network_1 can have access to Network_3. After fixing this issue between networks I would make sure to document all my observations and findings while troubleshooting. That way future techs can go back and reference my work to help them troubleshoot similar problems.
As for challenge number 2, I would first go about checking each workstation on Network_2. Some of the things I would do first would be to try and ping a known good IP address on the internet and see if we get any response. If we do not get a response on one of the work stations, I would check to make sure what IPv4 is configured properly and also use the "ipconfig" command to see what the default gateway is set to. If it was not configured properly on one, I need to fix it and check that the others aren't setup in the same way. To do this I would check to see if we can use the "tracert" command on the gateways listed on one of the machines on Network_2 to trace the traffic on the network and see how many hops until it fails.
