Analyzing Confidence Intervals in Adolescent Asthma Studies

The sample was adolescents between the ages of 11-17 years old who have asthma and treatment at the clinics participating in this study in the rural and suburban areas of North Carolina. 46 providers from the 4 clinics agreed to participate in the study. 2. Write out the research question that can be answered by the confidence interval (CI) in (a). Does watching educational videos and completing an asthma question result in discussing tobacco smoking at a medical visit? 3. Describe in words the population parameter that is being estimated by the confidence interval (a)? The population parameter is being estimated is 44% adolescents from the intervention group that went to visit their doctors. Tobacco smoking was discussed during their visit whether it was brought up by the adolescents or the provider. 4. What is the margin of error for the confidence interval in (a)? The error of the margin is the confidence interval is .07 since the confidence interval is. 14 which is always twice the margin of error. 5. Interpret the CI in (a) using your own words. What is the answer is it giving us regarding the research question? The confidence interval shows the population parameter falls within the interval with a small margin of error and standard error. Parameter is 44% of the adolescents and the 95% confidence interval is 37-51% with the margin of error is .07 and the standard error of 035. It tells us the less than half of medical visits discussed smoking tobacco when you have asthma so from the one study it is hard to say if watching the video and filling out an asthma questioner influenced choosing to talk about smoking tobacco or not. There are more sample studies that would have to be done with bigger sample sizes to get more dependable results. PART II 1. Write out the research question that can be answered by the confidence interval in (c). Did watching an educational video and filling out a questionnaire affect the outcome of discussing tobacco smoking at the adolescent's medical visit? 2. Describe in words the population parameter that is being estimated by the confidence interval in (c). The parameter population is the difference between the adolescents who participated in this study form the intervention group and the control group that discussed smoking tobacco with the medical provider at their visits and whether watching a video filling out a questionnaire influenced the outcome. 3. What is the margin of error for the confidence interval in (c)? The margin of error for the confidence interval is .1 which is greater than the margin of error from each individual group's confidence intervals. 4. Interpret the confidence interval in (c) using your own words. What answer is it giving us regarding the research question? The confidence interval is 95% shows that the population parameter difference between the two groups is
