HQI: Module 6 Discussion - New Technology
Share your observations about how technology improves or does not improve healthcare quality. Discuss the impact on the following:
Communication Caring Patients
.
Then, select one of the areas impacted-communication, caring, or patients--and propose a new technology (e.g. BCMA, CPOE,Telehealth) that could improve quality in that area. You are required to research at least two evidence-based resources and properly cite them in your post
In responses to your peers, identify if you believe they recommended the best new technologies for the problems, or suggest an alternative technology.
The healthcare industry is a constant adap on of the various needs of consumers and world
health. As a result, technology is steadily increasing presence within the everyday prac ces of healthcare workers and pa ents, alike. The goal of technology in healthcare is to improve the quality of care provided to a popula on, by making informa on more accessible, up to date, and standardized amongst providers. Improvements in communica ons are one of the goals of including technology in the healthcare systems. Within the system, "Communica on is enabled by mobile compu ng which allows
is incorporated with the task to detect complica ons faster, and streamline point of care, to provide most e cient services. To reduce the incidence of repeat procedures, medica on reconcilia on, and constant history gathering; technology is useful in maintaining the informa on in a singular place that is accessible to various providers. The goal is "to promote informa on sharing between hospitals, long. term care facili es, and providers of behavioral health services," (Kirtane, J. Lynn, J. Marco e, L. & McKethan, A. 2015). However, much of the personal touches in communica ng with pa ents is lost with the standardized use of technology. Providers come under the impression that they may spend more me at the computer screen then actually conversing with pa ents. Strict regula ons bound the use of the informa on technology and privacy regula ons prevent the amount of informa on to be shared. "As most of the data is stored in the cloud nowadays, pa ent data is exposed to various security breaches." (Detmar, S. & Sneha, S. 2017). Caring for pa ents with the assistance of informa on technology has insurmountable possibili es. Included are the use in home health se ngs, limi ng the number of appointments pa ents must a end in person. Addi onally, the amount of informa on readily available including evidence-based prac ces, test results, etc. is pulled up almost immediately, making treatment
mes more tolerable. The downside is the dependency on technology and the personality that is lost behind the screen. Pa ents with the use of informa on technology have access to the same materials their providers do. They have complete access to their medical chart, labs, and test results -- they are also able to schedule appointments online, enter home health informa on, and ask ques ons without having to be see
