The reason I chose to research these two articles to help me build on my final project, because
they will help me to understand the microbiology of the bacteria, how the disease is spread
(Epidemiology), gain a better understanding on how to trace the disease back to the source, I will
learn how research is conducted by utilizing an observational method and finally it will help me
to understand how to implement interventions for changes.
The prompts of the final project asked to discuss about the population, place, disparities, risk,
incidence and prevalence, mortality, and level of preventions.
The articles I have chosen touched on all these areas. For example, the article "Salmonella in the
Caribbean" explained that people from the St. George and Victoria counties were the most
affected, which described the disparities. People who purchased farm eggs and uses it raw were
at high-risk for being infected with salmonella. In addition, the article discussed levels of
prevention, which includes antibiotics for severe cases and simply waiting for the bacteria to
complete its course.
The other article "Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Raw Turkey Products
- United States, 2017--2019" conducted an epidemiologic investigation that researched the
spread of salmonella. They conducted a multistate cluster investigation, to trace the source. The
article mentioned the incidence and prevalence of the infection in 2018 and 2019, with 42 states
being infected by salmonella from raw turkey. In addition, the article included interventions that
was put in place to prevent the spread of salmonella by washing the meat thoroughly and avoid
touching surfaces with dirty hands where the food was prepared.
The articles will help me to formulate my paper by implementing a full understanding of
epidemiology and how it is dealt with by the public health departments. From understanding the
spread of the disease, how it affects the public health, the incidence and prevalence and the
preventions put in place. The articles also has evidence-based materials and is not bias.
I learn that salmonella is a bacteria that is spread by uncook food products, like eggs and meat. A
person who ingest the bacteria usually found in fecal matter may experience headache,
abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Death can
occur in more serious cases. Usually, a person can feel better after one week and do not
necessarily need antibiotics, but is an option for treatment.
Salmonella can be easily prevented by simply washing all meat products and cook thoroughly. In
