Principles of Epidemiology and Food Borne Illnesses

Nathaniel Agyei 01/11/2020 Locating Resources I chose Vibrio Infection and Escherichia coli because they are all food borne related illness like salmonellosis and shares common signs and symptoms in the affected person. These two diseases will assist me in my final research project, it will give me more insight as to different ways the disease can be spread to other persons in relation to salmonellosis I learnt that vibrio infection can be contracted when "infected by consuming raw or undercooked seafood or exposing a wound to seawater. Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer." (CDC, 2019) I also learnt that some of the symptoms are similar to salmonellosis like diarrhea, vomiting, fever, just to mention a few Infected persons passing out watery stool can replenish with adequate water to prevent dehydration which may worsen the situation at hand. Furthermore, E. coli are bacteria that can be found in our environment and in foods and as well as animals, they can also be found in the intestine of persons. "Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea" (CDC, 2019), symptoms and treatment are mostly similar to both vibrio infections and salmonellosis. In terms of population, I can say that the people who can be infected by salmonellosis can easily be infected by my chosen two diseases because they are all food borne and water borne diseases. In terms of health issues; the mode of transmission is the same, the risk factors such as poor diet which comes with poor immune system, poor drainage system, bad habit of storing and preparing food as well, just to mention a few. And in terms of prevention, I can say that they all have similar ways of prevention because adequate fluid intake help to prevent dehydration which will help replenish the body for strength. These resources will be very useful in my final project because it will support me in all areas example when it comes to population, it will give me wider look at the number of susceptible individuals who can be infected by the disease at a particular time Reference Cholera.
