Locating Resources
Article One: Information for Healthcare Professionals and Laboratories https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/general/technical.html
I chose this article because it talks about Salmonella estimates, incidence, trends, risk
factors, and outbreaks. I also thought that this article would be beneficial because it states basic
Salmonella information such as definition and symptoms, treatments and outcomes, Salmonella
Genus and species, and sources of infection. Connections between this article and the final
project article, Salmonella in the Caribbean, are they both include information on Salmonella
stereotypes. The most common serotypes of Salmonella that infect humans are Enteritidis.
Typhimurium, Newport, and Javiana. This resource will be useful when completing the final
project because it will aid in analyzing Salmonella to determine epidemiologic principles and
trends. It will also help with various research in levels of prevention. Something interesting that I
learned about Salmonella is that there are over 2,500 recognized Salmonella serotypes. Another
fact from the CDC that I thought was informative was that there are certain medications, such as
antacids, can increase the risk if Salmonella infections.
Article Two: Prevention https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/general/prevention.html
I chose this article because it has information on the specific preventions that should be
taken to prevent Salmonella. The article provides five facts and statistics that will lower one's
chance of being infected. Connections between this article and the final project article,
Salmonella in the Caribbean, are they both include information on the spread of Salmonella
from foods, animals, people, as well as the lack of reporting of Salmonella. The CDC articles
states that "for every person with a Salmonella illness confirmed by a laboratory test, there are
about 30 more people with Salmonella illnesses that are not reported." The article Salmonella in
the Caribbean states that "in an evaluation of the Caribbean communicable disease surveillance
system, it was determined that less than 40% of notifiable disease cases were actually reported
by health care providers...as a result, the incidence of Salmonella continued to grow." This
resource will be beneficial in the final project because it is important in Epidemiology to
understand preventative measures. It will aid me in completing the primary and secondary
prevention strategies. I learned from my chosen article that Salmonella is more common in the
summer months and warmer climate areas.
