2-2 Journal: Personal Reactions to Joe Smith Potreen Greene Southern New Hampshire University Course Number: HSE-350-13460-M01 Professor Monica Farrar 5/19/2024
After reading the Case Study about Joe, I felt saddened because he is just giving up on life and living to die, with no higher expectations for a better life. I recognized that he was always self-referred and is now attempting residential treatment for the first time. One thing that Joe has on his side is that he has accepted that his life is unmanageable. Joe also has not stopped dreaming of a better life for himself. Joe has hit bottom and has nowhere to go and treatment will get him off the streets and hopefully enable him to grow and forgive himself for hurting himself so long. Living in the streets has also challenged Joe to feel that he has a way of being able to read people in a way where he knows if they are good or bad people. After Joe lost his aunt, he accepted that no one else in the world loved him, not even himself. Joe also lost all trust in his teacher/counselor after trusting her with things happening at home. Joe trusted her with everyday events ranging from his father beating him while his mother watched and being sexually abused by his uncle at the youthful age of 14, which lasted a year. Joe felt that was more damaging than good because that made him shut down and not talk to anyone. Joe also reported that the death of his father made him incredibly happy, he described it as a monster that often beat him up while his alcoholic mother watched the fight. Joe's mother and sister still live in the same town however Joe does not communicate with them. Jow described his mother as drinking herself to bed daily and his sister as being depressed and bone thin and sleep deprived. Joe also has experience with many different drugs but not fond of alcohol. Joe has a heroin habit of 8-10 bags daily and would benefit from long-care inpatient treatment as well as medical treatment. Joe also has not established that a higher power could restore him to sanity.
