Addressing Trauma and Building Trust in Substance Use Treatment

Crisy Klaus 2-2 Journal: Personal Reactions to Joe Smith HSE: 350 Substance Use Southern New Hampshire University January 18,2024 The culture of abuse that Joe grew up with is something that will need to be addressed. Due to Joe having past traumas that he has yet to properly deal with this will affect his treatment and his ability to stay clean. He will need to ensure that he works with his counselor to address the traumas he has endured during his life. Joe will also need to understand that this process will not be an easy one and being open and honest with his traumas will only help him to not only work through them but is also important on his road to recovery. My belief when it comes to Joe being able to work through his past traumas is one of hope and that it will take some reassurance, especially due to his lack of trust when it comes to counselors. Since Joe had an experience with a counselor that caused him to lose trust due to requirements of reporting the abuse that was taking place it will be a difficult road for him. It is going to take time for him to learn to trust a counselor again, but I feel as though he will be able to. Joe is someone who has been through a lot of trauma and abuse in his life. He has also ended up trying different treatments which he was unsuccessful with completing or relapsed again. It is going to be important to find the right counselor for Joe for his treatment to be successful. I believe with the correct tools, proper counselor, and Joe's willingness to succeed he can be successful with his rehabilitation. This will not be an easy process for Joe to complete and he will be facing demons that he may not have realized are there, but in the long run this will ensure successful treatment and the possibility of Joe not relapsing again in the future. He needs to set goals for himself, which he seems to have some things in mind such as a job and family. These are great goals for him to have and with these in mind this can also lead to him being successful and completing his treatment.
