Answer these questions: Do you feel ready to be a substance abuse counselor? Why or why
not?
I am ready to become a substance abuse counselor. I am an addict in recovery and have been
through counseling and still have a counselor to this day. I want to use my own experiences and
successes to help others find what works for them to help as many people as I can get themselves
out of the rut of addiction. I know what has and has not worked for me and I can easily
empathize with all my clients. I have been in their shoes and have hit the lowest of the low and
had to pull myself from nothing to turn my life around to what it is today. I have had several
counselors and I know ways that I could improve on their counseling methods and genuinely
believe that I have a lot to offer this profession.
Discuss what you see as your hopes, strengths, reservations, and limitations concerning
substance abuse counseling. What do you hope to take away from this course?
My hopes are to gain all the book knowledge that I can in reference to substance use and
counseling. I have a life experience of addiction and recovery so my hopes are to add book
knowledge to that experience to become the best counselor and advocate for the addicted and
suffering that I can be. My biggest strength is my own experience in addiction and my long-term
recovery. I have also been working on this degree for a little over two years now and have
maintained good grades in all my courses. I do not have any reservations or limitations at the
present time. I hope to take away as much knowledge about substance use screening and
counseling as I can from this course
