Slide Two: What is the origin of substance abuse?
Substance abuse has a far longer history than most people realize. "...alcoholic beverages were being produced as early as 7000 B.C., according to the article The Earliest Alcoholic Beverage in the World. In addition, hallucinogens have been found in caves in Peru that date back between 8600 and 5600 B.C" (Gray, 2015) There have been several research studies throughout history that have successfully demonstrated the link between substance addiction and mental health disorders. According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, "almost 24 million people (about the population of Texas) abuse illicit drugs in the United States, nearly 18 million people abuse alcohol, and 22,114 people died of prescription drug overdoses in 2012 alone." Those are alarming statistics, which have risen over time as the prevalence of substance usage has increased.
Slide Three: What is considered substance abuse?
Substance abuse, according to Jennifer Casarella, is defined as the use of illegal substances. It can also occur when you consume too much or misuse legal substances such as alcohol, prescription medication, or other legal narcotics. Chemicals contained in both legal and illegal substances impact the way your body and mind work and function, which causes people to perform in ways that are not consistent with their personalities.
Slide Four: Who is impacted by substance abuse?
Drug addiction is not a one-person issue, according to the article "Why Drug Addiction Is a Social Problem," and it has a domino effect on people around them. It is a social issue that normalizes drug use and has a negative impact on individuals and their families. When someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, they will begin to neglect their obligations, which will have a detrimental impact on their profession, their children's schooling, and their family's financial security. It will also have a detrimental impact on their friends and neighbors who rely on them.
Slide 5: What is important about who substance abuse impacts?
Though a person's substance abuse has had an impact on their family, friends, and community these are the people who can have the most impact on a person's recovery. These individuals can be the best source of support for them since they can show them what they are losing because of their substance abuse problem. They can provide an individual suffering from substance abuse with the tools they need to be successful in their rehabilitation, whether it be financially, emotionally, or physically.
Slide 6: How does society impact substance abuse?
Substance abuse is influenced by society in a variety of ways. Most individuals do not take the time to research substance abuse, and as a result, they make rash choices about those who are dealing with this terrible problem. Society believes that substance abuse is a persona
