2-1 Discussion: Factors, Challenges, and Dimensions of Wellness
Three factors that I believe could improve people's wellness level based on each
dimensions, I would start with emotional, physical, and spiritual. I feel each of these dimensions
is primal to the core of one's wellness based on these factors being focused on oneself.
Emotional dimension of wellness is being able to express and maintain your feelings, keep a
positive point of view on life regardless of what is happening around you. "Emotional wellness
reflects a positive approach to life. Emotional wellness is the ability to manage and accept
feelings and behavior. Emotional wellness is reflected through taking responsibility to manage
one's life in personally fulfilling ways and recognizing limitations and seeking support when
necessary." (Strout, Howard). Balancing your emotional dimension is essential to wellness
because your emotions are the root of your personality and what you portray to the world.
Physical dimension focuses on the physical activity you do, the kinds of foods you eat, and
allowing your body to rest and sleep. This dimension is important because it's important to
exercise your body, and to eat the necessary nutrients. If you treat your body well and feed it
well, it will be well generally in the long run. "Results indicate that participants who consumed a
higher number of healthy foods demonstrated less risk of cognitive decline in older age." (Strout,
Howard). A lot of can people struggle with this dimension because fast food and other take out
options are usually easier than making fresh foods daily. "The results indicate that physical
activity during teenage years demonstrated the lowest odds of cognitive impairment in older age.
" (Strout, Howard). Studies also show that the amount of time you put into your physical health
at a young age can reflect your overall wellness at an older age. Spiritual is also essential to
overall wellness because it's the ability to look beyond yourself and look to see the true meaning
of life. To be able to look past yourself and see a bigger picture can put a lot into perspective, and
was one of the reasons I took my first step towards better health. A real life example of someone
who took their wellness into their hands is myself. I drastically changed my wellness and health
over the last two years by changing what I eat and my physical activity levels. I ended up losing
over 100 pounds and achieving wellness. I chose emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions of
wellness because I feel like those are three that I try to focus on and maintain a balance in these
aspects of my own life and wellness. These dimensions helped me transform my overall wellness
by stop smoking, eating healthy, exercising, and praying. All I had to do was focus on those three
dimensions, and while there is always challenges and setbacks, my health and wellness was
important to me to keep going.
