Wellness and the Four Lenses

IDS 402 Final Project Milestone One: Critical Analysis Portfolio and Presentation Proposal Avilio Bruno Southern New Hampshire University May 12,2021 Introduction Wellness has many definitions, but some of the ones I am most fond of have to do with physical and mental wellbeing. Staying healthy, active and well-nourished as well as maintaining a good social life and feeling fulfilled are factors that go into this. Up until March of 2020, these things were easy for most people, but then COVID-19 began to spread and turned the world upside down. Wellness on a physical and mental level have been difficult for hundreds of thousands of people since the pandemic hit, and now our society is forever changing and adapting as we learn wellness through the four lenses. History Analysis through the lenses of history is a valuable tool to help us solve problems in both the future and the present day. As the saying goes, the past will tell you the future. Historically, COVID-19 is not the first pandemic that has plagued the world (but hopefully it will be the last). Through the lenses of history we can compare it similarly to the previous pandemic, the Spanish flu, which happened 100 years ago. Ewing says in his article, "that since the COVID-19 pandemic came to public attention, examples from the 1918 influenza have been invoked to explain how to flatten the curve through social distancing, the efficacy of masks, and the advisability of school closings" (Ewing 2021). This is an excellent example of the past helping prepare for the future. Humanities Humanities is the study of the human experience and philosophies. It asks us to question things and to see things from different perspectives from our own. Many people refuse to see things in the shoes of others and therefore cannot use the lenses of humanities. Countless individuals refuse to be vaccinated and take precautions to protect the public health because of the "It won't happen to me" attitude, and they completely disregard the feelings and safety of others. On the other hand, seeing COVID through the humanities lense has also helped others bond and press past the struggles brought on by the pandemic by being able to connect with others. Wendy Hesford states in her article about post-covid recovery, that being able to continue cultural practices and express ourselves creatively may hold just as much importance as medical treatment. (Hesford, 2021) Natural Sciences The lens of natural and applied science is the method used to observe the world and how things work through the process of experimentation and study. This helps us to better understand the world and the processes of nature that lie within. Understanding the nature of disease process helps our scientists better equip our medical professionals with the information they need to combat the virus from a scientific standpoint. The biggest milestone of this pandemic as of yet that science has been able to overcome is the creation of a vaccine. Dr. Yager when interviewed by Medica
