Mental health has many different forms. Some people really don't have to think about their
mental health, some people never suffer depression where others struggle with it every single
day. Depression can have impacts on everyday life, affect people's careers and can cause massive
disruptions. People have had to seek professional help through therapy and medication. "Major
or clinical depression is a serious but treatable illness. Depending on the severity of symptoms, your
primary care doctor or a psychiatrist may recommend treatment with an antidepressant medication.
They may also suggest psychotherapy, or talk therapy, in which you address your emotional state."
(Bruce, D. F.(2020) People can also turn to other avenues to help combat depression, People can turn
to art, exercising, cooking etc. For me I love to turn to music because its something that I can connect
with and forget about whatever is bugging me. Music allows people to get transported into a different
place that can be a safe haven. Some of the obstacles surrounding mental health is the stigma.
Essentially the stigma of depression is that a induvial is just sad and will get over it, Man up your
feeling do not mean anything etc. "- The stigma of depression is different from that of other mental
illnesses and largely due to the negative nature of the illness that makes depressives seem
unattractive and unreliable. Self-stigmatization makes patients shameful and secretive and can
prevent proper treatment. It may also cause somatization. A major contributing factor is that
depression for those who have not had it is very hard to understand and so can be seen as a sign
of weakness." (Lewis Wopert,2001) Strategies that can be deployed to counteract the negative
stigma are expanding education surrounding mental health, A perfect example of this is well this
course! Big Companies should also try to promote mental health within their company.
