5-1 Discussion: Science and Wellness
Hello class,
Before the pandemic, virtual health care was not very prominent. After the Covid-19
stay-at-home orders, though, virtual care boomed. Insurance companies from Aetna to Blue
Cross Blue Shield have noticed a considerable difference. The most significant part of virtual
care is for mental health care. "Telemedicine had the biggest impact on mental health visits with
approximately 33% of appointments held virtually" (Rodriguez, 2021, para. 2). This is because
most mental healthcare is just talking to someone. Plus, anxiety and depression were a
consequence of the pandemic, which gave rise to more mental health care. Primary care is the
second-largest percentage of telemedicine since a lot of that is just talking to. "Most of the
physical aspects of a primary care visit -- such as measuring weight and blood pressure can be
done at home with inexpensive equipment. Other physical examinations only require a camera
and can be easily diagnosed virtually" (Rodriguez, 2021, para. 3). Telehealth has led to fewer
unnecessary lab and imaging visits, same-day appointments, and shorter visits.
Telehealth has come a long way in wellness. It changed the environment people received
care. Patients can get care they normally had no access too for physical and mental symptoms.
Unnecessary care happens less, and care can be scheduled in a timelier manner. Telehealth has
been a great addition to wellness.
