Mental Health and Wellness

IDS-402 4-1 Discussion: Wellness in the Media I have selected the Harry Potter films as my pop-cultural example. https://visual.ly/community/Infographics/entertainment/visual-summary-harry-potter Harry Potter films have a strong relationship to the definition of wellness as provided in the reading. Harry Potter film show many concepts of mental wellness. One of the concepts would be that Harry Potter experienced a tragic loss at a young age when his parents passed away. After the death of his parents, he was forced to live with his aunt and uncle who were physically and mentally abusive to him. Harry Potter would use his magic in ways that would express his dark and depressive state of mind such as taking his anger out by releasing a snake from a cage at the zoo so that it would attack the son of his aunt and uncle. Another concept from the film that represents mental health is the social anxiety that Ron Weasley deals with as they overcome all obstacles. The social implications of Harry Potters's depression and PTSD are that he experiences recurring flashbacks, angry outbursts, guilt, and the feeling as if he needs to isolate himself away from his aunt and uncle because he feels he is different from them. Ron has social anxiety from living a poor lifestyle. The effects of his social anxiety cause him to lack self-confidence, feel alone, and constantly be afraid of the result of the challenging obstacles he faces throughout all the films. Colgan, A.
