Description of Issue or Event
Wellness is a such a wide topic that can be applied to our everyday life. For me I have
struggled with my mental health in the past and people around me have suffered from mental
health issues. Mental health at its core is so important to the overall life of an induvial.
Therefore, for me this is a huge issue and the reason why I am going to do this project around
mental health.
Description of Population/ Societal Impact
My mental health has always been a struggle, I've had good days and bad days. For me it
comes in waves and there's no reason behind me starting a wave it can be the smallest trigger.
Not everyone is like me though, all people deal with their mental health differently, some do not
have to work hard at keeping their mental health in good health, others like me have a harder
time keeping their mental health in good health. According to Mental Health America the
number of adults in the US that suffer from mental Illness is around fifty million people. (Quick
Facts and Statistics About Mental Health, 2022) Granted some types of mental health are visible
and can be treated. I suffer from depression which can be the cause of other medical issues like
addiction. The happiest people in the world can be suffering from mental illness and can seem
completely fine and happy. The impacts of mental health on an induvial can be a wide range. It
can be feelings of sadness to becoming social secluded. Society has painted mental health as a
non-issue in my opinion. I was raised to keep my feels to myself, it wasn't my parents saying
that but the people who I grew up around. People would make fun of others for saying what they
are truly feeling. Even to this day I find myself trying to work through it on my own which is not
good for my mental health.
General Education Interdisciplinary Lens
Looking at mental health through the humanities lens we can quickly see that the issue of
mental health is not an induvial issue but a global issue. According to the United Nations
depression is currently ranked third in global burden of disease and is expected to rank number
one by 2030 (United Nations. Mental health and development enable 2022) For someone who
suffers from depression reading this state makes me relieved that I am not alone but I'm so sad
others are going through this as well. On a social level people struggling with mental issues can
feel socially isolated and can possibly lead to future issues that can harm individuals and
communities. Mental health/Depression is an issue that people suffer from, looking at the topic
through the humanities lens we can see this issue is a global issue as well as a induvial issue that
can effect people in different ways.
