2 The art work I selected is "Venus of Urbino" by Titian, created in the Renaissance period in 1538. It is an oil painting on canvas that measures 119 cm x 165 cm and is currently housed in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, Italy. In approaching the analysis of "Venus of Urbino" within the context of my exhibition theme focused on the Venus/Goddess representation in art I will begin to analyze critical element such as the archetypes, characteristics, and role of the medium. 1 In terms of archetypes, "Venus of Urbino" embodies the archetype of Venus, representing the idealized female form, femininity, love and beauty. 2 The painting depicts a nude woman reclining in a luxurious bedroom setting with a seductive relaxing facial expression. She is lying on a lavish bed with disheveled sheets and her hand is Titian, Venus of Urbino, 1538, oil on canvas, 119 x 165 sensually positioned near her hip. The Venus archetype is evident in the painting through the portrayal of sensuality, beauty, and confidence in the subject. 3 celebrates the idealized female form because the Venus seems to be aware and comfortable with being depicted naked, and she seems to welcome the idea of being desire. Multiple aspects contribute to how we interpret "Venus of Urbino" through different characteristics. Firstly, the woman's reclining relaxed pose is a visual cue that signifies sensuality and self-assuredness. Her posture exudes confidence and invites the viewer to appreciate her beauty. This position aligns with the archetype of Venus as a symbol of love and desire which is central to my exhibition's theme. Secondly, the sheet on the bed being rumpled adds an element of eroticism to the scene, instigating that they are in disarray due to activities on the bed. It suggests that this moment is intimate further emphasizing the theme of sensuality. Lastly, the inclusion of the dog at the foot of the bed carries symbolic significance. Dogs were often used symbolically in Renaissance art to convey various meanings, including fidelity, loyalty, and sometimes even as guardians.3 The interpretation that the dog in the painting symbolizes marital faithfulness makes sense because, during the Renaissance era, marriage and the roles of women were important topics in both art and society.
