1-4 Assignment: Users and Solutions
For this assignment I decided to choose Instagram, I use this app more than any other
app on my phone. Looking at the app, I believe the overreaching goal this app was created for is
to allow people to share their interests with other people with the same interests. This can be
anything from lifestyles to travel or more simple things like different hobbies such as black
smithing, cosplay, or modeling. When first downloading the app, you create a profile and page
where you can post your own photos and videos and Instagram encourages you to follow pages
that might be similar to your interests. You can also find and follow friends and family members.
These all led to the conclusion that Instagram is a social media app designed to bring together
liked minded people and allow them to share their interests and hobbies through photographs
and short videos while also promoting small businesses with brand awareness.
The user needs that this app is designed for is pretty straight forward. This app serves
anyone at any age, if you have an interest, hobby or trying to promote your business, there is a
place for you on Instagram. The accomplishment from the user can very, but the main
accomplishment would be to gain as many followers as possible. Since this is a social media
application, the more popular you are the more followers you will accumulate, Instagram helps
you with this by suggesting your page to different users. Based on my finding, I do not believe
that Instagram is trying to persuade you to take an action specifically, but it does encourage you
to grow your following and to follow other pages. The app's business objective is to drive brand
awareness, boost sales, and build and track audience engagement for its users, while Instagram
itself uses ads for a revenue stream for the app itself.
The screen layout for Instagram is very well make and easy to navigate. It has 5 main
buttons at the bottom of the screen that include home, search, reels, shop, and profile. It also
has 3 buttons in the top right corner of the screen that consists of a new post button, a
notification button, and a messages button. Small details that I found that have proven to be
useful is if you swipe right on the home screen it will take you straight to camera mode where
you can take pictures or record videos and upload them straight to Instagram without leaving
the app itself, this is a very effect component for the user.
If I was designing an app similar to this one, the information that I would want to know
about my users' goals, needs, and experiences would be a combination of what people are
interested in, how often they upload their pictures and videos to the internet, and their
experiences with other social media applications. This would allow me to design an
