Overcoming Communication Barriers in Team Leadership

7-3 Project Three: Communication Plan Juan Esparza Southern New Hampshire University MGT 200 Leadership and Team Building Instructor Sandra Sheppard February 25, 2024 In business, communication is vitally important. From interdepartmental memos, company wide emails or just team meetings. Communication is essential for tasks to be completed so that when barriers come up, it is important to effectively get over those barriers in an orderly manner. Some communicational barriers may be " ... filtering, selective perception, information overload, emotional disconnects, lack of source familiarity or credibility, work-place gossip, semantics, gender differences, differences in meaning between Sender and Receiver, and biased language" (Bauer, 2019). When looking at Large Technology Company's (LTC) recent acquisition of Small Technology Company (STC), the team increased from four to ten team members. With this acquisition some of the new team members felt lost due to new communicational barriers that were not there previously. One issue could be the different understanding between the sender and receiver. Off-site employees like Carlos, Jerome, and Portia might communicate in a different way than the precious LTC is used to. It is difficult for others who are not used to each other to get a handle on each other without a proper conversation. Without proper conversation biases could arise in the workplace such as a lack of credibility due to the time on the job. Jerome and Carlos both have around one year of experience in their fields which may lead to ageism bias and that they are not informed enough about their jobs, especially since they are off-site employees. This bias of experience could lead to good ideas being passed over because of their little experience. There could even be attribution bias against STC employees since LTC acquired their company and undervalue the knowledge and experience the members of STC bring. Or even the Horns effect when looking at Arjun's work hours and Jerry's over exuberance. Being the leader of a team comes with certain expectations and one of those is the ability to trust that one's team is working effectively. A leader must be able to control their emotions and lead the team with unbiased actions. If I was set to lead the LTC team, I would consider the fact that my actions and emotions will affect the team either for good or bad. If I am unable to be self-aware and be able to self-manage myself in a manner I would expect out of my team. By setting an example for my team to follow will allow them to trust in me and find me more approachable when the situation arises. Knowing the issues as they come up would allow me to resolve the building conflict and stop them before they happen. As a leader I need to be able to make an honest self-assessment about my strengths and weaknesses. Understanding where I come up short would allow me to better lead a team in a manner that suits my personality and taking a personality test like the
