Career Planning and Leadership Development

Running head: [Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 1 8-2 Case Study: Career Planning Thaddeus Carwile Southern New Hampshire University [Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 2 Robert is well liked and respected by his subordinates, this coupled with his title of supervisor allows him to have both legitimate and referent power over his subordinates. These are Robert's strengths and serves well for his current position as supervisor. However, Robert has aspirations of becoming the bottling manager and within five years, becoming the director of operations which overseas the entire factory floor. Robert's weaknesses are that he is shy and avoids social interactions which limits his networking abilities, and he is quiet around his superiors and does not talk about his achievements. Even though Robert excels in his position and has proven his abilities as a leader, this is all unnoticed because he is quiet and does not make his accomplishments known to his superiors. If Robert wants to achieve his aspirations, he must increase his emotional intelligence in his weak areas such as relationship management and self-awareness. Improving his relationship management skills will allow Robert to become closer to his superiors which will allow him to be more comfortable about being more open with them and allow him to promote himself by talking to them about his achievements and aspirations. Improving self-awareness will allow Robert to be more confident in himself and his achievements. It is possible that Robert does not talk about them to his superiors because he simply feels that his accomplishments are not good enough or that they do not matter. It would be a good idea for Robert to seek out a mentor within his organization, possibly someone who has risen through the ranks themselves as Robert is wanting to do. If he expresses his interest in promoting within the company, he should not have any trouble finding someone willing to mentor him and guide him through the steps necessary to achieve his goals. This would also be a great opportunity to learn from his mentor's experiences. Robert is already aware of the skills that he lacks to achieve his desired positions and is willing to obtain those skills through classes. I believe that once Robert completes the classes that he needs, this [Shortened Title up to 50 Characters] 3 achievement towards his goal will give him a little more confidence and possibly that would be the ideal time to seek out a mentor. This will show his superiors that his is willing to put in the work to promote within the company.
