Hi All!
After re-reviewing the Chipotle case and considering the emotional intelligence resources provided, it is evident those in positions of leadership within the company demonstrate the four EI competencies to support both their triple-bottom-line and sustainable business leadership approaches.
Self-Awareness: Exhibits this by disclosing their financial results quarterly and annually as well as their sustainability strengths and weaknesses in their annual sustainability report.
Self-Management: The current CEO of Chipotle, Brian Niccol, has been at the helm since 2018 and has continually made decisions that led to increased revenue year over year, but he is also concerned with self-management. For example, in an interview with Time.com Mr. Niccol states, "We do this exercise where every quarter, we check in from the folks that work directly with me all the way down to the restaurant, which we call a four-by-four. It's really just asking: "What are the four things you're focused on for the business?" "What are the four things we're focused on in developing you?" It's a powerful tool because you take accountability then in saying how you want to grow. Your manager then is responsible to help you grow, and then you're also crystal clear on your accountabilities on performance, because I think those things have to go hand in hand" (Simons, 2021).
Social Awareness and Social Skill: These two go hand in hand in reference to Chipotle's business model as they continually strive to "make a real impact for communities, people, and planet by purchasing millions of pounds of local organic ingredients as well as pledging millions of dollars to young farmers" (Chipotle, n.d.).
If I had to choose one EI competency as being the most crucial in sustainable business leadership, I would pick self-management. I say this because having strong leaders in place is paramount to any companies' success. Without proper leadership, companies fail. Therefore, the attributes listed under self-management which are self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, achievement orientation, and initiative (Goleman, 2000) are all qualities that a quality leader should possess to manage, lead, and inspire with sustainable practices and goals in mind.
