Converting Formula to names~
1.Decide what type of compound the formula is representing.
a. ionic compound
I. metal-nonmetal: The formula contains one symbol for a metal and one symbol for a nonmetal (binary ionic compound). M.Ab this is the general formula M=represents the metal A=represents the nonmetal element.
b. Metal-polyatomic ion: monatomic anions can be substituted with polyatomic ions. A formula that contains a metal symbol and a polyatomic ion formula is an ionic compound.
c. Ammonium-nonmetal or ammonium-polyatomic ion: Ammonium ions can take the place of metalli cations in an ionic compound. They look like NH4. Example: NH4CI represent ionic compound.
2. The names of ionic compounds are the name of the cation followed by name of anion.
3. Metals with 1 possible charge (groups 1,2,3-AI, Zn, and Cd) are given the name of the metal.
4. All the rest the metallic elements that have more then one charge are given the name of metal with additional Roman numerals.
5. Polyatomic cations (only ammonium) are given the name of the polyatomic cations.
6. Nonatomic anions: are given root of nonmetal. "ide".
7. Polyatomic anions: are given the name of the polyatomic anion. NO is Nitrate
