Synthesis of Biodiesel Caitlyn Wamsley February 19th, 2023 LL CAROLINA - Data From Lab 2-1: Introduction to Molecules - Activity 5 Basic Hydrocarbons: Observation Questions 1. Does the ball-and-stick model look like the expanded structural formula? No, they are showing different things, so they are meant to be different. 2. What similarities are there between the ball-and-stick models of methane and propane and their respective molecular and expanded structural formulas? The ball and stuck models are meant to show the shakes and patterns of display and very detailed, but the Lewis structure models don't show exactly how atoms connect. They both show the atoms labeled but there are much more details shown for the ball and stick models. 3. What differences are there between the ball-and-stick model of methane and propane and their respective molecular and expanded structural formulas? The difference is the ball and stick models show in 3D what atoms bond where and the structured models show much less details about bonds and correct arrangement or placement. 4. List the information that the ball-and-stick model provides that the structural formula does not. It provides a 3D view of how the atoms bond and how they are organized or set up to be able to break and form instant bonds at the exact same time. @ 2016 Carolina Biological Supply Company 2 Data Table 3 Straight-Chained Hydrocarbons Class Type of Bonding General Formula Alkanes Single bond C_nH_2n+2 Alkenes Double bond CnH_2n Alkynes Triple bond CnH2n-2 Exampl Structur e al Formula HH Ethan HCCH e H H C2H6 3-dimensional geometry Shape Rotati Bond on of Strengt Bonds h C-C 341.1 kJ/mo tetrahedr al Trigonal planar C-H 610 kJ/mo Ethen e CzH4 Or 305 kJ/mo I per bond 835 kJ/mo Linear C-H HC=CH Ethyn e C2H1 Or 278 kJ/mo I per each bond 2016 Carolina Biological Supply Compan
