Introduction to Hexane
A.Why Hexane?
The reasoning behind my choice to explore the compound Hexane was because I didn't
have any knowledge of it and wanted to learn more about it. I currently only have a personal
connection with Hexane through the products it is used in that I have purchased. Hexane is
commonly used in adhesives as well as a variety of other products used and sold globally. The
compound is used all over the world as a significant gasoline constituent, cleaner/degreaser,
biodiesels production, making shoes, rubber cement production, oil extraction from crops, and
many more. I believe I may have many more opportunities to work with hexane. Environmental
science has many careers that frequently use Hexane or utilize products directly from Hexane.
B. Physical and properties description
Hexane is an organic compound belonging to the Alkanes class. The compound consists
of hydrogen atoms and saturated carbon atoms. Hexane lacks color but it does have a faint
petrolic odor, similar to gasoline but is hard to detect the smell below 130 ppm. This compound
is a volatile aliphatic hydrocarbon and comes in the form of liquid (Vedatu, 2022). It is a non-
polar solvent with a boiling point of 68.5' to 69.1C when it is pure. Hexane has a vapor
pressure of 17.60 kPa (at 20.0C). Hexane's complexity is 12 and has a 9.5 mg L-1 solubility
The viscosity of hexane is 3.26 10-4 pa-s at 20 C.
magnetic susceptibility of --74.610- cm3/mol. Hexane is easily evaporated and highly
flammable with a flash point of -9' F. Hexane has low vaporization latent heat (330 kJ /
kg), and high solvent selectivity. It is also known to attack some plastic and
rubber forms. Its vapors can be explosive, as well. This is the melting point for hexane --96
to -94 C; -141 to -137 F; 177 to 179 K. The refractive index is 1.375 Qn/Qc. The dipole
moment for hexane is 0.08 D and the viscosity is 0.3 mPas.
C. Molecular description
Hexane is straight chained and unbranched it has the chemical formula of
CH3(CH2)4CH3 or C6H14 with a molar mass of 86.178 g:mol-1. There are two different atoms
in hexane. Carbon has 6 electrons and of those 4 are in the outer shell. The valence electron is
from hydrogen in its 1s orbital. Hexane total valence electrons= (6*4) +(14*1) =38. It has a
tetrahedral shape with 109.5' angle between bonds.
The compound has a density of 655kg/m3. Hexane is less dense than water and is
insoluble in water. In fact, hexane will float on top of water when added to it. It is also
hydrophobic in nature. Hexane's vapors are heavier than air.

Reaction: The chemical reaction for hexane is a combustion reaction. This is the
