6-1 Practice Activity: Types of Terrorism
Scenario 1:
The type of terrorism in this scenario is Lone Wolf Terrorism. In this scenario, a hotel guest
check into the hotel and has been there for several days. Members of the hotel staff noticed
several suspicious things about the guest, including binoculars on the table, a box of ammunition.
and writing on their t-shirt that implied violence against government officials. The guest is
suspected of being a lone wolf since the guest had little to no interactions with anyone during
their stay at the hotel. In addition, the hotel is also adjacent to the State House and the U.S.
District Court which raises more red flags. This type of terrorism is usually conducted by
"individual extremists who act alone without clearly identifiable associations with terrorist
organizations or networks" (Martin, 2019).
Scenario 2:
The type of terrorism in this scenario is International terrorism. In this scenario, an undercover
FBI agent has infiltrated an online chat group with twenty members in multiple states and the
group is actively recruiting more. The undercover FBI agent also found that several members
have ties to people on a watch list of known al-Qaeda operatives. There is also evidence that
shows that this group plans to plant bombs under key bridges and tunnels in the states they live
in and detonate the bombs simultaneously. This type of terrorism is usually conducted by

"individuals and/or groups who are inspired by, or associated with, designated foreign terrorist
organizations or nations" (FBI, 2016)
Scenario 3:
The type of terrorism in this scenario is Domestic terrorism. In this scenario, there are two
inmates who are members of a neo-Nazi organization called Atomwaffen Division. A corrections
officer at the state prison overheard the inmate's conversation about an upcoming attack by four
members of their group against a market and shops frequented by members of the Jewish
community. This type of terrorism is usually conducted by "individuals and/or groups to further
ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious,
social, racial, or environmental nature" (FBI, 2016).
