Homeland Security and Counterterrorism

Harris1 Zanaea Harris CJ 310 November 27, 2022 5-2 Practice Activity: Attack on a Critical Infrastructure Sector In the scenario, a group of domestic terrorists have planned to attack a critical infrastructure sector within the United States. The critical infrastructure sector that is being attacked is Agriculture and Food. The terrorists plan to add herbicides to the irrigation systems at multiple privately owned farms. By adding herbicides to the irrigation systems, it will devastate production of crops watered with herbicide. This attack jeopardizes not just the food supply, but also the economic well-being of farmers, truck drivers, and retailers selling the crops. The sector- specific agencies that will response to this event would be the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency. The primary mission of the Department of Agriculture is to ensure a "safe, sufficient and nutritious food supply for the American people" (Martin, 2019). As for the EPA, it is responsible for protecting human health and the environment (Martin, 2019) The Department of Homeland Security goals protect U.S. citizens during a critical event because DHS core mission is "to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards" (Martin, 2019).
