Name of Legislation The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 (October 26, 2001) Purpose of Legislation The purpose of this legislation was to address the new security threats our country was facing, especially after the attacks of 9/11. It revised standards that were already established for government surveillance to help tackle potential terroristic threats [ CITATION Mar19 \/ 1033 ]. The Department of Homeland Security Act of 2002 (November 25, 2002) The USA FREEDOM Act of 2015 (June 2015) The purpose of this legislation was to establish a large cabinet-level department that absorbed the functions of several large federal agencies due to the original Office of Homeland Security not having any administrative authority [ CITATION Mar19 \/ 1033 ]. The purpose of this legislation was to revamp the USA PATRIOT Act by modifying or eliminating provisions that were already established. It was a direct response to a document leak by Edward Snowden that revealed the NSA engaged in bulk data collection of telecommunications records such as telephone and internet records [ CITATION Mar19 \/ 1033 ]. Effectiveness of Legislation The legislation enhanced the governments ability to conduct surveillance authority by tapping into e-mail, electronic address books, computers, and more. This enables agencies to monitor individuals suspected of making terroristic threats or those that are suspected of associating themselves with known terrorist groups. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security helped enable agencies that have interests in stopping terrorism to work together and share pertinent information amongst other agencies to stop potential threats. We see this often when there are task forces that consist of government agencies such as the FBI, DEA, CIA, and other federal, state, and local agencies. The more agencies that work together in cohesion, the more effective the legislation can be in stopping terrorism. This legislation is different from the other two because it limited some of the governments authority that was afforded to them by the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001. It limited the government from collecting data of the American people and parameters had to be met to collect that data. This legislation helped improve the safety of the U.S. citizens by preventing them from having their data
