Gun Control
Responsible gun owners across the states continuously voice their thoughts and opinions on gun control and how varying regulations are essentially infringing on their constitutional rights. Do present-day firearm regulations provide sufficient measures to lessen crime and cover/protect guns I.e., ownership within the United States?
1) Present Day Firearm Regulations.
A. Introduced by Robert Lee Doughton, the NFA" (National Firearms Act) was approved through legislation in 1934. The act was intended to curb gang activity by imposing taxes "on most NFA firearms" as it was "considered quite severe and adequate to carry out Congress 'purpose to discourage or eliminate transactions in " the firearms utilized for crime during that era, (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives 1934).
B. Three high-profile assassinations expedited the next pivotal regulation referencing gun control. President Lyndon Johnson signed the 1968 Gun Control Act via legislation which banned firearm sales and ammunition to felons along with those who are "mentally incompetent". The 1968 Gun Control Act also provided new regulations on interstate sales as well as devices deemed destructive.
C. A brand new legislation signed into law targeted the ownership of specific firearms President Ronald Reagan signed the Firearms Protection Act in 1986. This federal law revised the 1968 law and notably banned the sale of machine guns to private purchasers
2) How Well Does Gun Control Fare in America?
A. Modern-day research suggests that there were roughly 390 million firearms in circulation in 2018, indicating about 120.5 per 100 people. The numbers adequate estimates that studies have shown steadily increasing. With such a high ownership rate this seemingly exposes thousands of millions, including children, to firearms.
B. The early years of gun control were spearheaded by rigid crime and prominent assassinations which legislation played a critical role implementing laws and regulations that have dwelled well into modern society. Granted there has still been a daunting number of deaths by a variety of guns in recent years even with key legislative pieces in place.
C. There are several regulations that serve the purpose of restricting access of guns within the U.S. However, some studies suggest that gun control measures only affect a small portion or minority groups referencing firearm sales but that doesn't equate to total firearms owned collectively.

D. Alabama gun laws are what some may consider lax and weak in terms of access to guns, regulations such as open carry, permit to carry etc. According to the CDC Alabama has a 23.6 firearm death rate however, this still doesn't effectively measure gun control. Regarding laws, Govenor Kay Ivey signed a new bill that will go into effect Jan 1, 2023. which is the "Permitless Carry Bill".
