2 Cloud Computing Cloud computing is composed of three different types of deployment models, Infrastructure as a Service model (IaaS), Platform as a Service model (PaaS), and Software as a Service model (SaaS). Infrastructure as a Service model is designed for companies that do not want to maintain their own data centers and manage infrastructure. The IaaS provider manages the hardware infrastructure (server, storage, network) and makes it available as a virtual resource over the internet. In the Platform as a Service model the developers use the platform for software development and deployment. PaaS enables developers to quickly develop and deploy apps without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. In the Software as a Service model the platform provider hosts the application and makes it available to the users over the public internet. With this model, users don't need to install any software on their computer or server - the application is available through any popular internet browser. Utilizing the IaaS model would be most beneficial when dealing with disaster recovery or backup solutions, mostly due to the hands-off aspect. Seeing as the IaaS provider handles the hardware infrastructure, this gives the organization utilizing the service the flexibility of performing a complicated task like storing data, backing up data, or recovering data in a few simple steps. Platform as a Service exhibits its strengths in flexibility, customization, and cost reduction. PaaS provides flexibility to companies who must make constant changes to their approach to marketing or software development. Companies that develop highly customized software applications will find it is much easier to apply these changes through PaaS as it allows for fully customizable applications. The PaaS deployment model cuts the overall cost burden and reduces the risk of investment. Software as a Service displays beneficial value in public applications that can be accessed through a web-browser, such as email, calendaring, and Office
3 tools (as in Microsoft 365). In the SaaS model, users do not need to worry about software updates - the application is up to date because the provider handles the maintenance. Benefits and Drawbacks of the Cloud Benefits of On-premise Models . Cost: The overall cost of on-premise models could be less than it would cost migrating all data to the cloud. . Quality Control: The organization would have complete control over the data in an on-premise model. · Lack of Internet: Processing data would not be reliant on an internet connection as it would all be at your fingertips. · Security Breaches: There would be less of a chance of a security breach as all data would be controlled directly by the company. Drawbacks of On-premise Model · Cost: There would be an upfront cost and maintenance responsibility that the company would be liable for. · Wait Time: There would be a longer implantation time. · Storage: Limited storage could cause issues for organizations as their data grows with the company.
