DAT 375 Random Sampling, Module Six Emily Sargent 10/08/20223
I analyzed the provided data set on crime occurrences in Miami-Dade County. I created a random sample in excel using the RAND function to create a smaller sample size of data, around 10% of the original. This gave me 44 lines of the original 444 lines. The random sample is illustrated in the below pivot table: Crime Code Count of Crime Code 2 23 1 13 0 6 4 1 Grand Total 43 KEY Crime Code 2 Theft 1 Burglary 0 Criminal Mischief 4 Armed Robbery As you can see, theft, burglary, followed by criminal mischief, and lastly, armed robbery. Using the complete 444 lines of data, I recreated the pivot table and got the following: 2 Crime type 3 BURGLARY 4 THEFT - ALL OTHER 5 CRIMINAL MISCHIEF / VANDALISM 6 RETAIL THEFT Count of Crime type 93 52 46 27 Again, we see the top three crimes are the same, but in a different order. Burglary is number one, followed by theft, and lastly criminal mischief. Random sampling is the way you pick a 'subject' to be in your study or sample group, so to speak. Essentially, it means you are choosing them randomly from a selected group. It is done to make sure that the sample is representative of the whole group, which is vital for the study's accuracy. It is important to note that a study is only truly random if everyone has an equal chance of getting picked.
