Selecting, developing, and evaluating staff requires a clear understanding of the role of the position within the organization.
Roles in an Organization:
All employees within a healthcare organization have specific roles. Each role requires the person to assume the personal as well as formal expectations of that specific role. Employees need to have a clear understanding of their role and to perceive their contributions as valued. Employees who understand and accept their role are empowered to succeed. They are more likely to be committed to their job and to achieving the goals of the organization. Empowered employees demonstrate increased personal health, job satisfaction, and individual performance success. These principles are true of the nursing leader. The nurse leader plays an integral role in assisting employees to understand and embrace their role. Staff development and empowerment to understand and embrace their role. Staff development and empowerment creates a learning environment directed towards excellence.
Role theory--provides a framework for the development and evaluation of staff in the concept of their roles.
Role clarity-- focuses on the individual having a clear concept of their expectations within the organizations
Some key ideas of role theory related to taking on a new role are:
Roles affect an individual's interaction with others Role ambiguity in the workplace creates an environment for misunderstanding and hinders effective communication Role conflict occurs when employees know what is expected of them, but they are either unwilling or unable to meet the requirements Role acquisition is the ability to clearly take on the role. This is the time dependent and varies based on individual experiences and values Role clarity is focused on the individual having a clear concept of the role they are expected to perform
The role of the professional nurse is complex. Role acquisition, role clarity, and role performance are enhanced using a clear position descriptions and evaluation standards. Position description are written guidelines
detaining roles and responsibilities of a specific position within the organization. The position description or job description is an explanation of the roles, responsibilities and expected outcomes for the person who is fulfilling the job. The position description should reflect current practice guidelines for individuals and may have competency-based requirements
