Intellectual Property Rights and Prescription Drug Prices

BCOR 1015 Guidelines for Position Statement for Module #6 - Intellectual Property Rights Module There are five (out of seven) Position Statements due in this course. Due dates are listed in the "Daily Planner" section of your syllabus. These Position Statements are an opportunity to practice and prepare for the midterm and final exams. Content: You must analyze the question/prompt below, take a position and support your position. Your analysis should include not only the reading specifically assigned for Day #4 of the module, but the entire content of the module including all readings, class discussions, class activities, etc. Considering the readings assigned for Day #4 as well as other course readings and discussions to date and answer the following prompt: According to the CDC, nearly half of all Americans have been prescribed a prescription drug in the past month. However, at least 1 in 4 Americans has trouble affording prescription drugs. This is because the price of branded drugs has risen astronomically in the past decade. For example, a dose of insulin in the US costs $339 yet it costs $39 in Canada. The high cost of prescription drugs is forcing patients to skip doses of critical medicines. Pharmaceutical companies argue that the high drug costs are justified, and it helps to fund research and development. It takes an average of 1ff-15 years and $2.6 billion to bring a pharmaceutical product to market. The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars on R&D, and yet there is no guarantee the drug will be successful, 9ff% of the products do not make it to market. e Do you think that price control regulations are an effective solution to curb the increasing prescription drug prices? You cannot answer both prompts Grading: Keep in mind that your position statements will be graded according to how well you display (out of 24 points): Mastery of key concepts defined in readings, discussions, and game days (8) Clarity of thought in response to the prompt, substantiation of arguments, non-contradiction of positions (8) Identification of weaknesses, costs, or challenges to positions chosen (6) Correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation (2) Format: The word limit is 4ff words. Font size, margins, and number of pages are unrestricted due to the 4ff-word limit.
