Palpation: to examine or explore by touching an area or organ of the body Derived from the Latin word "Palpatio", meaning to touch Is an art and skill 1.Locating a structure 2.Becoming aware of its characteristics 3. Assessing its quality or condition so you can determine how to treat it
Goals of Palpation Palpation is a skill that is commonly used in clinical practice * Two Goals 1.anatomical palpation 2.assess the structure identified
Making Contact Greater sensitivity and stability 1. try laying one hand on top of the other
Smaller Structures One or two fingertips
Larger Structures * Whole hand
Rolling and Strumming * When outlining the shape or edge of a bone, try rolling your fingers or thumb across, rather than rolling along its surface
Movement as a Palpation Tool Active movement 1.partner actively moves his body while you palpate or observe the movement
Passive Movement * Your partner attempts to perform an action against your gentle resistance
3 Principles of Palpation 1.move slowly. Haste only interferes with sensation 2.avoid using an excessive pressure. Less is truly more 3.focus your awareness on what it is you are feeling
