Ethics in Pharmaceutical Practice and Research

The IFPMA is the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) and its main goal is to make sure there are ethical codes of conduct being followed. There are a basic set of standards that are making sure the patients well-being is the main priority, standards are quality, safety and efficacy are being followed per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ensuring stakeholders are nothing but professional, companies are being held responsible and will respect the privacy of patients (HIPAA), proper risk assessment is monitored, clinical trials and research are for benefiting medicine and patients are fully aware of what is being studied, and that all employees are trained properly. I believe these are all great principles to adhere to in practice for all companies. The IFPMA is for all healthcare professionals, medical institutions, patient organizations and pharmaceutical products. When taking the code of practice training, I was surprised to find out that only recently in 2019 gifts were banned. It makes more sense that gifts for incentive and personal benefit were banned in 2012 but there were exceptions to that rule like wedding gifts until 2019. Printed and electronic material need to identify the pharmaceutical company, an audio-visual material should be appropriate for whoever the audience is as well as the presentation of the materials such as ads, links, and more. Along with this, there should be country-specific laws and regulations to limit the spread of misinformation. Another major code of practice is that pharmaceutical companies need to be fully transparent with their intentions in clinical trials and what the patients will be subjected to. They are also fully committed to HIPPA regulations to protect and benefit to them in order for it to be performed. For medical education, there are policies to ensure they have the most accurate and recent information. The material must also be fair, objective, and allow students to have theories from all backgrounds. Medical education needs to be available to everyone of all backgrounds and cultures and it must be relevant to the medical or scientific community.
